Around Wyoming, Wednesday, May 7

A Sheridan man is working to bring a little cheer to those around him. The Sheridan Press reports for the past eight years, Kaleb Yager has decorated his yard for multiple holidays with hundreds of themed decorations. Yager, who is autistic, says he continues to do it because he thinks everyone loves to see it, and he wants everyone to be happy.

A Sweetwater County sheriff is bringing his career to a close in a full circle moment. Detective Sgt. Jeff Sheaman is retiring. But in 2010, he had just recently been sworn in as a deputy when he was called to a stranded boat rescue on Flaming Gorge Reservoir. On the boat, 3-year-old David Lew was developing hypothermia. Sheaman wrapped the toddler in his coat and held him to his chest to share body warmth, which paramedics said saved his life. Now, Lew is graduating from high school and has asked Sheaman to present his diploma at the ceremony.

A University of Wyoming junior has earned a national award. Samantha Killmer is the first UW student in 10 years to receive the Goldwater Scholarship, which identifies, encourages, and supports outstanding undergraduates pursuing research careers in science, engineering, and math.

Ivy started as a science news intern in the summer of 2019 and has been hooked on broadcast ever since. Her internship was supported by the Wyoming EPSCoR Summer Science Journalism Internship program. In the spring of 2020, she virtually graduated from the University of Wyoming with a B.S. in biology with minors in journalism and business. When she’s not writing for WPR, she enjoys baking, reading, playing with her dog, and caring for her many plants.
