Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Remembrance/Wyoming Equality Day - Casper
On January 20, 2025, Serve Wyoming will host the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Remembrance/Wyoming Equality Day, to honor Dr. King’s legacy.
“On Monday, we will answer Dr. King’s call to serve and make a difference in the lives of Natrona County residents,” said Shelly McAlpin, Executive Director of Serve Wyoming. “It is a resourceful way to meet local needs; volunteer service is a powerful tool that unites us around a common purpose and builds strong communities. We are putting the core American principles of citizenship and service into action.”
The “day on-not off," will begin at 9am with the "Unity" student art display at Art 321 (321 W. Midwest Ave), which is also the starting point for the march at 10:00am. The celebration will continue at 11:00 at 1pm at First United Methodist Church (302 E. 2nd St). Join us during the celebration for live music, our keynote speaker, Kendyl Terry, worship leader, speaker, teacher, musician, High School career guidance administrator, father will be speaking on unity in our community, together with his wife Ginger Terry a mental health therapist at the Healing Place in Casper. Mrs. Terry has her Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.
Take the Pledge of Nonviolence, and participate in service through donations to Project Homeless Connect. Service project will follow in the basement of the church to help benefit those experiencing homelessness. Please consider contributing to the project by bringing everyday supplies for basic needs - shampoo, deodorant, floss, soap, lotion, feminine hygiene products and other hygiene items. In Natrona County 75% of the homeless population are male. Please keep that in mind when donating items. We are also collecting donations of winter jackets and gear to be able to distribute with the hygiene bags. Consider providing supplies for homeless pets as well - dry dog food, bedding. Supplies can also be dropped off in advance at Serve Wyoming, 330 South Center Suite 317. Following the celebration, you are invited to explore the Casper Freedom Trail, a community project highlighting the civil rights movement in and around Natrona County, view the full length Casper Freedom Trail video online under ServeWyoming.org or at one of our viewing sites around the city, and continue to learn more about the rich black history of Casper through the online story map.
People of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can get involved. For opportunities to not only give back this day, but any day, go to ServeWyoming.org and click on Volunteer.
