The U.S. Supreme Court has handed abortion decisions to states. That means state supreme courts will likely have to review what abortion rights people have under state constitutions. In the Mountain West, there are already several lawsuits about abortion laws that these state courts have to review. That includes one suit in Idaho and another in Utah, which has led to a temporary stay of that law going into effect.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to list the northern long-eared bat as endangered. The bat’s populations are being decimated by a fungal infection called white nose syndrome. While these bats only touch Montana and Wyoming in our region, they could spread this fungus to other hibernating bats in the Mountain West.

Interior Dept official visits western cities to monitor wildfire challenges and tout federal fundingThe Interior Department’s Deputy Secretary is visiting several places around the West to tout federal funding for wildland firefighting. A new report commissioned by the Interior Department provides a window into the fatal mistreatment of inmates in its tribal jails. The review comes on the heels of a Mountain West News Bureau and NPR investigation that found a pattern of neglect and misconduct contributing to at least 19 deaths at tribal detention centers overseen by the Bureau of Indian Affairs since 2016.
