Northern Wyoming Mountain Partnering With AmeriCorps

Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation Area

Starting this December, Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation Area will be hosting AmeriCorps members who will work on broadening access to outdoor activities and recreation for kids in Sheridan and Big Horn counties.

The mountain, located near Shell, reopened two years ago.

Nikki Ulug, the development coordinator for the Antelope Butte Foundation, said this new program fits with its mission, which focuses on opportunities for youth and beginners in the outdoors

"Skiing and snowboarding and mountain biking, all these things have so many benefits," she said. "You improve your self-confidence, you get these healthy habits of living this active lifestyle, you're able to develop all these new personality and character development things, but it's so expensive."

This program will expand what they've already been doing at the mountain, Ulug said. The mountain brings nordic skiing classes to schools in two Sheridan County school districts, as well as providing them with a day of skiing on the mountain.

"They're really going to help us be able to reach more schools. So we're looking at going into Big Horn County as well, and go into schools in Greybull and Basin and be able to reach more students," she said.

The AmeriCorp programming will run December through August and provide both winter and summer recreation opportunities for youth.
