Wyoming Snowmobile Trail Ranked Fifth in the West

Snowest Magazine has ranked the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail the fifth best trail in the West.  Wyoming State Trails Program’s Ron McKinney says the reason the Continental Divide Trail is so popular is that it offers 490 miles of very diverse mountain riding.  The trail starts at South Pass and ends at West Yellowstone.

But, McKinney says, the rugged terrain also means snowmobilers should use extra caution.  “Be careful because there are always hazards out there, especially with the beetle kill trees and with the wind,” McKinney says.  “You never know when you’re going to come across a tree across the trail.  So just use caution and beware of the steep slopes and avalanche danger, especially when there’s new snow over top of old snow.”

McKinney says the avalanche danger right now is moderate.  For the most up-to-date conditions on the trail he recommends checking with the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center.
