Indigenous Foods Making a Strong Come Back At Local Event

The town of Wilson will host an event on Indigenous foods and their healing potential and well known Native American chef Sean Sherman will attend. The event, called "The Food Sovereignty Gathering" will offer workshops on Indigenous identification of various plants, berries, and roots. During the event, people can also check out booths featuring wild foods and products.

Ben Clark is the founder of the American Wilderness Botanicals that hosting the conference. He says he plans to share his knowledge of herbs. Clark states, "You can't get too close to herbs without getting too close to food." Keynote speaker for the event, Sean Sherman, has defined Native American cuisine with his recent James Beard Leadership award and in 2018 the James Beard American Cooking award with his cookbook, The Sioux Chef's Indigenous Kitchen. Sean will speak about Indigenous foods and how to prepare them.

The Sioux Chef will be visiting the Wyoming area, speaking on behalf of indigenous foods, teaching how to keep culture alive through cuisine. The Food Sovereignty Gathering is taking place July 7 and 8 in Wilson. Other guest speakers will also share their experience of indigenous identification of various plants, berries, and roots.
