Legislature Passes Sexual Abuse Awareness Bill

A bill that would allow educators and students to be trained about child sexual abuse squeaked through the Wyoming Legislature Saturday.

At the urging of Senator Lisa Anselmi-Dalton and several lobbyists, the House suspended its rules to allow Senate File 93 to be considered after it had previously died without being heard. Several conservative members of the House objected to the bill, saying that it was a topic that should be addressed at home and not in school.

But Casper Representative Debbie Bovee said it is about sexual abuse prevention. “Provide parents information, provide training to teachers so that they can realize when someone is being sexually abused. Find instructional methods relating to this so that we can appropriately tell our little kids that nobody has the right to touch them," Bovee said.

The bill now heads to the governor for his consideration.
