The Wyoming Senate is continuing to work on a bill that addresses state and federal roles when it comes to the proposed TerraPower’s planned Natrium Nuclear Power Plant.
The Senate considered an amendment that would put the facility under the state’s Industrial Siting Act, instead of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). But while Senators often prefer state primacy or regulation, Gillette Sen. Jeff Wasserburger said this is something different.
“Throughout the summer trying to decide if advanced nuclear reactors are safe for my community I came to the conclusion that Wyoming does not have the expertise to do this and where that expertise is…is the NRC,” said Wasserburger.
The Senate also rejected an attempt by Lander Sen. Cale Case to tax the power generated. The bill will be debated for a final time on Thursday.
