After several amendments the House Education Committee approved a bill that is intended to move forward with Wyoming’s education accountability system.
After a series of amendments by Pinedale Republican Albert Sommers the committee pushed back the next phase of the accountability process.
Sommers says he wanted to take another look at the accountability model and give the committee addressing accountability more time.
"Lets give them some time to come up with that phase two piece that makes sense and not rush it and really that’s what most of this was about. And then the rest of it is just tweaks in the accountability model. I mean this all came out in one session…boom."
Park County Number One Superintendent Kevin Mitchell says the committee was right to slow things down.
"We need to determine what the state assessment is gonna be, then get the state system of support in place, then we can move forward with the components. But until we know what the target is to get judged by and then what is the support gonna be if you fail or do very well, I think until we get those two components in place it’s difficult to do the rest."
Cheyenne Democrat Mary Throne says it’s been a couple of years since anyone has worked on accountability and slowing down will probably help everyone. The bill moves to the House floor for further debate.
