The Wyoming Senate voted 15-14 to amend a billthat intends to ban abortions in the state if the U-S Supreme Court overturns Roe vs. Wade. The amendment adds that abortion is legal in the case of rape or incest.
Cheyenne Sen. Lynn Hutchings strongly argued against the amendment.
“Taking a life because of the circumstance of conception is wrong. Two wrongs actually don’t make a right,” she said.
Amendment sponsor Cale Case of Lander said women are not the government’s property and the rape or incest exception addresses egregious cases.
“The government can’t do this to women, they’re not our property, we don’t get to decide these kinds of things, it’s beyond the people on this floor,” said Case.
After the amendment, the Senate had a long discussion about the necessity of the bill prior to the Supreme Court ruling on abortion. Lingle Sen. Cheri Steinmetz said they are protecting a human life and that many women don’t know what they’re doing until the abortion has taken place. She said it can lead to women attempting suicide. The bill will be debated for a final time on Thursday.
