The Wyoming Senate has started working on a bill that originally attempted to limit any teaching that resembled Critical Race Theory.
But following an amendment, the term “Critical Race Theory” has been removed from the bill. Sen. Charles Scott of Casper changed key language and it now says studies shouldn’t include things that promote divisions or hatred on the basis of color or origin.
Gillette Sen. Jeff Wasserburger, a former social studies teacher, said the change convinced him to support the bill. Wasserburger says history is filled with controversy and that shouldn’t be limited. Cheyenne Sen. Lynn Hutchings, who’s African American, said the guidelines are important because some want to go too far.
“It’s divisive and for me it’s scary. Because what it does in essence is it turns the tables. It allows people of color to discriminate against whites…and that to me is evil,” said Hutchings.
The Senate File 103 will be debated two more times.
