The University of Wyoming football team is set to face off against North Dakota Saturday in the season opener. Along with fans and cheerleaders, the University’s bigger-than-ever marching band will be there to cheer the Cowboys on.
The University of Wyoming Western Thunder Marching Band is made up of 235 students playing instruments, drumming, spinning flags, and conducting. It has 20 more members than last year, as well as a new director in George Schrader. Schrader says the band is growing because its leadership and work ethic is something kids want to be a part of. Plus, it comes with some great perks.
"It’s a great tradition. It’s a great social network for these students to come in on, as well. New students get to get here plenty early, you know. They get to move in to the dorms before anybody else does, and then they get to meet 230 other great students that are going to be there right along with them," says Schrader.
The band will play an opener, a halftime show, and pep tunes at the game. Kickoff is at War Memorial Stadium at 2pm.
