Peabody Lays Off 250 People, Closes Gillette Office

In an effort to cut costs amid weak coal prices, St. Louis-based Peabody Energy is laying off 250 corporate workers, including 20 in Gillette.

“While we regret the impact that these actions have on employees, their families and communities, today’s announcement represents another necessary step to drive the company lower on the cost curve,” CEO Glenn Kellow said in a statement.

Peabody says it will provide the laid-off workers with severance packages and job counseling. The layoffs won't affect miners.

In addition to those workers who are losing their jobs, thirty other employees in Gillette will be reassigned to other Peabody offices in Campbell County.

Peabody has struggled financially recently, posting more than a $700 million loss in 2014. The company says it expects the layoffs and office closures to save $40 to $45 million.
