Park County offers youth mental first aid training with new perspective

Park County is offering adults the opportunity to become certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid. While this training has been offered in years past, this one will include a faith-based mental health component.

Healthy Park County is sponsoring the two trainings in Powell and Cody. Wendy Morris, Healthy Park County's community prevention specialist, said the eight-hour, evidence-based training covers a range of topics.

"We have people attending that we might not otherwise have attended, had it been a more secular, with this more secular approach," she said.

Morris said the training has been successful in the past but this year it is attracting different collaborators in the community like churches.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid Training teaches adults skills like helping a young person who's dealing with a panic attack, contemplating suicide or struggling with a substance use disorder.

Morris also said this type of training is especially important in a community where mental health has been identified as needing more support.
