After a four-win and eight loss season, University of Wyoming Football Coach Craig Bohl says the team needs to play better this year.
The Cowboys opened fall camp Monday with a new quarterback, a highly-regarded pair of running backs, and several questions. The biggest question marks reside on defense. All-America candidate Eddie Yarbrough leads a unit that has been re-vamped since last season. Bohl says three or more freshmen may be asked to either start or play significant minutes. But he remains optimistic that the unit could improve.
“I think we have more athleticism than what we had in the past, players understand what our expectations are and what their assignments are, however you’re gonna see some young unproven freshmen that are out there, I think they have good ability, but there will be a couple of freshman mistakes and we’ll need to overcome those with good athleticism.
The biggest change on offense will come at quarterback where Cam Coffman will be the new starter. Coffman, a senior transfer from Indiana, will be asked to lift up a Wyoming offense that ran the ball well last season, but sputtered at key times. Bohl said that the solution is to keep drives alive.
“Well, what’s gonna be important for us to do is just stay on the field. That third down rating is really gonna be important, many times those are plays that are done by the quarterback, so Cam’s experience is certainly going to be helpful.”
Bohl is excited to see if running backs Shawn Wick and Brian Hill can pick up where they left off last season. The two ran for over 15-hundred yards. Wyoming opens the season at home on September 5th against North Dakota.
