The ESPN/USA Today Basketball Coaches poll has ranked the unbeaten Wyoming Cowboys 25th in the nation. The Cowboys just missed being ranked in the top 25 of the Associated Press poll by gathering just enough votes to place 27th.
Head Coach Larry Shyatt is downplaying the ranking, comparing his team to riding in a car.
“We are in a vehicle, probably not a Lexus, more like Camry…that would better describe us. And the picture I’m trying to create for them right now is that all of us are in that car. We better keep two hands on the wheel, we better look straight ahead, because there are a whole lot of distractions up in the air right now and this being one of them.”
Shyatt credits his team’s focus for starting the season with 13 wins and no losses.
He said that they won’t be excited until they make the N-C-double-A tournament in March.
“I think this is terrific perhaps for the media, fans, boosters, but I think our team is fairly focused and they understand that they are in the eye of the hurricane now.”
Shyatt said the team is focused on what he calls “a very good Boise State team” that comes to Laramie Wednesday night. The Cowboys enter that game nationally ranked for the first time since the 1987-88 season.
