A Cheyenne attorney who once helped Liz Cheney run for office, is now running against her. Harriet Hageman announced she is taking on Cheney in a battle for Wyoming’s lone congressional seat. The announcement came after she received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
Trump said in anews release that he strongly endorses Hageman who's a former Republican National Committeewoman and gubernatorial candidate. Trump had interviewed Hageman and other potential candidates planning to face Cheney in an effort to unseat her for voting to impeach him.
In her announcement, Hageman said she's running against Cheney because "she betrayed Wyoming, betrayed the country and she betrayed me." Hageman added that Cheney has lost the trust of the people of the state and lost any ability to be a leader for Wyoming in Washington. Hageman is a 4th generation Wyomingite. As an attorney Hageman fought the federal government in several private property cases.
Following the announcement, Cheyenne attorney Darin Smith said he's suspending his congressional campaign and will endorse Hageman. Smith said in a statement that "hell would freeze over" before he’d be the reason that Liz Cheney gets re-elected to congress. He could change his mind and re-enter the race if Cheney were to drop out or if run-off legislation were passed by the state legislature.
