A massive winter storm that will continue overnight has dumped over a foot of snow in some places and drifts even higher. Local law enforcement agencies said snow accumulations, icy roads and strong winds have contributed to a number of accidents and many communities are asking residents to stay off the roads.
Chris Jones of the National Weather Service in Riverton said the storm lived up to expectations with the storm focused on the eastern half of the state.
"The heaviest snow and the strongest wind really from about Casper down through southeast Wyoming and the Capitol city and we expect it to linger in the lowest third of the state the longest," said Jones.
He added that the biggest concern remains the wind which will continue to cause problems into Thursday. As of early evening Interstate 25 was closed between Buffalo and the Colorado state line and Interstate 80 was closed between the Utah and the Nebraska state lines. Officials do not know when those roads will reopen. A number of other roads are closed throughout the state.
