Wyoming experienced 16 highway fatalities in January. Although fatalities have been declining overall, that's a relatively high number to start the year off with according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol. There was a total of 108 highway fatalities in 2018. WYDOT and the Highway Patrol are urging drivers to practice safe driving, especially during winter months.
Highway Patrol Sergeant Jeremy Beck said some of the 16 fatalities in January were due to motorists driving too fast for weather conditions.
"We're reminding the public that, once again, take it slow, that way you arrive at your destination safely. Make sure you buckle up, and give yourself a little bit more time, be patient out on the roadways when it is hazardous," Beck said.
Giving other cars space and wearing seatbelts are important aspects of safe driving. The Highway Patrol reports a head-on collision on Interstate 80 on Feb 5, resulted in no fatalities in part because all motorists and passengers were wearing seatbelts.
Beck also recommends keeping emergency supplies like flashlights, shovels, and a first aid kit in cars in case you become stranded or come across another stranded motorist.
