Microsoft Purchases Renewable Power For Wyoming Data Center

In its largest renewable energy purchase to date, Microsoft has agreed to buy more than 200 megawatts of power from wind farms in Wyoming and Kansas.

Credits purchased from the Wyoming wind farm will offset power use at the company’s Cheyenne data center. The arrangement is part of a deal with Black Hills Energy, the utility in Cheyenne.

“There is certainly more interest [in renewables] and we’re certainly looking at other ways to accommodate some of those interests as well," said Chris Kilpatrick, director of resource planning for Black Hills.

Microsoft is one of a number of large companies, including Facebook and Google, that have pledged to use their purchasing power to push utilities for more access to renewable energy.
