State Sets Up Temporary Resource Centers For Laid-Off Workers

Wyoming Department of Workforce Services

In the wake of layoffs at Wyoming’s two largest coal mines, the state has set up resource centers in Douglas, Gillette and Casper where laid-off workers can get help from state agencies.

Peabody Energy and Arch Coal announced Thursday they are each cutting 15 percent of their workforce, about 500 total jobs, at the North Antelope Rochelle and Black Thunder mines.

At the Douglas Resource Center, representatives from the Department of Insurance, Unemployment Services and Workforce Services set up shop at the Eastern Wyoming Community College. But as of noon on Friday, they hadn’t had anyone show up seeking help.

“We’ve heard that up in Gillette that there were quite a few more people," said Sean Downey, a program director for Workforce Services. "We’re just trying give these additional services because there were such a large number and we’re trying to help out in any way we can.”

The temporary centers will also be open 10 am to 7 pm Saturday, April 2 and Monday, April 4 at the following locations:

Casper – DWS Casper Workforce Center (851 Werner Court #120)

Douglas – Eastern Wyoming College - Douglas campus (800 South Wind River Drive)

Gillette – Gillette College Technical Education Center (3251 S 4-J Road)
