PBS Documentary Examines Sage Grouse

Wyoming PBS will air a program tonight that will examine the challenges facing the sage grouse that may land the bird on the endangered species act this year.

Called The Sagebrush Sea, the program will take a close look at why sage grouse numbers are in decline. Producer Marc Dantzler says he has been impressed by efforts made by the state of Wyoming to improve conditions for the sage grouse, but he says the bird’s condition in other states could cause it to be listed.

“Listing the bird is going to create a lot of challenges for the country to deal with in terms of the endangered species act and everybody realizes that. The challenge is not in Wyoming so much, but in some other states that will go unnamed, where governors and industry are walking away from the table.”

The Sagebrush Sea airs tonight at 7 p.m. on Wyoming PBS. The station will follow the broadcast with a special, sage grouse edition of its popular show “Wyoming Perspectives.”
