A bill sponsored by Wyoming Senator John Barrasso that would speed up processing of applications to export natural gas internationally/to international markets is making its way through Congress.
The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources held its first hearing on the bill Thursday, just days after the House passed similar legislation. It would force the Department of Energy to approve or deny applications for liquefied natural gas export terminals within 45 days of a completed environmental review. Many in the industry complain that the agency’s process is slow and unpredictable.
“Our bill will give investors greater confidence that LNG export projects will be permitted and built,” Senator Barrasso said, adding that it would spur job growth in the West and assist U.S. allies abroad.
Critics argue that exports will increase natural gas prices domestically and say the DOE’s review process shouldn't be rushed. Wyoming is the nation’s fifth largest natural gas producer.
