Ames Monument Ceremony Set For Saturday; Barrasso And Cheney To Attend

Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office

A dedication ceremony is set for Saturday, July 8 at the Ames Monument in southeastern Wyoming. It was listed as a National Historic Landmark last November.

Bobbie Barrasso will act as Master of Ceremonies, while her husband U.S. Senator John Barrasso will be in attendance alongside Governor Matt Mead and U.S. Representative Liz Cheney.

Completed in 1880, the monument was built in honor of Oaks and Oliver Ames—two brothers who helped to finance the Union Pacific Railroad.

Wyoming State Historic Preservation Officer Mary Hopkins said the pyramid reflects the great accomplishment of building the transcontinental railroad when the nation was in turmoil following the civil war.

“All of the high-style, the greatest of the great, worked on this monument in honor of Oakes and Oliver Ames’ contribution to the building of the railroad,” said Hopkins.

The dedication ceremony will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday and is open to the public.
