Construction will start in July at the Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport in Sweetwater County, to expand the commercial terminal and modernize the space.
Airport director Devon Brubaker said they will nearly double the size of the terminal and add things that are often seen in larger airports, like workstations where passengers can work and charge their devices while they wait. Brubaker also said that the added space will allow the airport to update its TSA screening equipment.
"Currently when you check a bag at our airport, as well as other airports around the state, every single bag gets hand-screened," Brubaker said. "When this project is done, we'll have the ability to automatically screen those bags through CT machines and the only bags that we’ll have to open up and look through are the ones that are alarmed by that system."
Brubaker said the project cost $19.5 million and has been primarily funded through state and federal grants. The project will take over a year to be completed but Brubaker said the airport will be fully functional while construction is going on.
