Crash Involving Hazardous Materials Closes I-80

WYDOT

A crash on Interstate 80 Wednesday morning has left westbound lanes closed between Rawlins and Laramie. US 30 north of Laramie and westbound lanes of I-80 between Laramie and Cheyenne were also closed to help with truck traffic and congestion.

The truck that crashed near the Arlington exit was carrying hazardous material including hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and flammable materials. Matt Murphy, the public relations specialist for WYDOT District 1 in Laramie, said WYDOT called in hazmat crews, but efforts were slowed because of winter weather.

“The sustained winds were around 30 miles an hour, and the gusts were around 60 miles an hour which hampered the cleanup process a little bit,” he said.

Hazmat crews are finishing the cleanup, and the roads are projected to reopen around midday. No one was hurt in the crash.
