Cheyenne Severely Short On Affordable Housing, Study Says

Cheyenne is severely lacking in affordable housing – and minorities and people with disabilities are feeling the squeeze the most. That’s according to a study released this week by the Cheyenne Community Development Office.

Federal housing authorities require a study like this every five years for cities to be eligible for hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants.

Deanne Widauf works for the Cheyenne Housing and Community Development Office. She said much of the city’s housing stock is old, “and if somebody has a family member in a wheelchair it can be very difficult for them to find housing.”

Cheyenne’s housing study suggests the city should spend money rehabilitating old homes and rental units, creating job training programs for single mothers, and providing free bus tokens to low income people.
