In preparation for President Obama’s announcement proposing gun control legislation last week, Wyoming lawmakers acted fast to propose bills making any such law unenforceable in the state. Wyoming’s Congressional delegation has also said that this legislation is not the way to go.
Wyoming Representative Cynthia Lummis has said that it would be better to focus on services for mentally ill people.
“I view most services to the developmentally disabled and mentally ill as state issues, but recognizing that these devastating events in Connecticut, Colorado, and elsewhere have elevated the public debate on this issue to the national level. I am willing to consider and expanded federal role in services for the developmentally disabled and the mentally disturbed,” said Lummis.
However, Lummis voted against the Affordable Care Act, which states that “mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment” must be covered by all insurance policies.
