Report ranks Cheyenne best place for retired vets

A new report ranks Cheyenne as the best city with a population under 175,000 for military retirees to live.

The report by financial services firm USAA and Military.com notes Cheyenne has relatively high employment opportunities and local access to medical care for veterans.

Army Reserves Lt. Col. June Walbert, of USAA, says the nationwide study looked at 379 communities. She said Cheyenne scored high on criteria that included housing costs, taxes, proximity to a U.S. Veterans Affairs hospital, and the ability for veterans to start new careers after ending military service.

Cheyenne is home to F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming Air and Army National Guard facilities and the VA hospital.
