Researchers at the University of Wyoming will send an experiment to the International Space Station this fall. The experiment will look at how tardigrades respond to the stresses of being in space. Tardigrades, or water bears, are tiny animals that live in water and look like chubby gummy bears under a microscope.

The University of Wyoming Physics and Astronomy department will devote three months of telescope time this summer towards studying the atmospheres of planets around other stars. This comes as a follow-up to recent space-based missions specifically designed to find hundreds of planets outside our solar system.

The House’s newly passed defense bill will establish a new armed services branch, the United States Space Force, which will be headquartered in Colorado Springs.

Are we alone in the universe? Can humans travel to far-flung planets? Are there other habitable planets? These are big questions, but there are scientists out there working to solve them, and in the process take a deeper look at our own Earth. One of those people is Dava Newman, the Apollo Program Professor of Astronautics at MIT and a former NASA Deputy Administrator. She will give a public lecture at UW as a visiting scholar. She sat down with Wyoming Public Radio's Caroline Ballard to discuss her work and the possibility humans will go to Mars.

Starting this fall, our region will host something new: a graduate program in space resources.

“This is the very first program in the world that is focused on space resources,” says Angel Abbud-Madrid, the director of the Center for Space Resources at the Colorado School of Mines.

Ed Belbruno is both an astrophysicist and artist. He discovered a new type of route to the Moon that was spectacularly demonstrated in 1991, rescuing a Japanese spacecraft. He is also a recognized painter, with a recent exhibition at Lincoln Center and a painting in NASA’s executive collection in Washington. Ed is affiliated with Princeton University.
