Rock climbing is making its debut in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the U.S. national team is training in Salt Lake City. For the eight elite athletes who make up the team, the games will represent a high point in their career.

The U.S. Olympic Committee could decide this week which Mountain West city could host the 2030 Winter Games. But both cities have a complicated history when it comes to the Olympics.

Salt Lake City and Denver are the last two American cities vying for the 2030 Winter Olympic Games.


Spotted In Downtown Evanston

When our Cultural Affairs and Production Director Micah Schweizer was out and about in Evanston, he found evidence of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Team. This small Wyoming town helped train and send the Jamaican team to the 2014 Olympics.

A former Wyoming Olympian and University of Wyoming Graduate will be serving as a U.S. Representative for the February Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.  Sarah Konrad graduated from U.W. with a PhD in Glaciology in 2001 and went on to qualify in cross country skiing and the Biathlon at the 2006 games in Torino, Italy.  Konrad currently works at U.W. as the Associate Director of Wyoming’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research.

Wyoming's Newlin just misses Olympic medal

Wyoming’s Athletes will leave the London Olympics without medals.  Riverton’s Brett Newlin just missed earning a medal when the U-S eight man rowing team he was a part of placed fourth, just behind Great Britain. 

Meanwhile, Cheyenne's Jennifer Nichols was eliminated Tuesday in the archery competition. 

Nichols was competing in her third Olympic games.

Dan Alon was a fencer on the Israeli team in the 1972 Olympics. That year, terrorists broke into the Olympic Village and attacked the Israeli team members, killing 11 of them. Alon was one of the few who escaped. He’ll be speaking in Jackson on August 9, and he talks with Wyoming Public Radio’s Willow Belden now.
