This time of year usually means the start of college football. Not this year. Without game days and big crowds of tailgaters, college towns across the Mountain West and beyond look different - and sound a lot different, too.

Riverton High School

The University of Wyoming marching band "Western Thunder" took a trip to Riverton to perform at a high school football game against Cody. The event, called "Bring the Thunder" is part of an effort to get students excited about going to college - and to recruit new members of the marching band. Wyoming Public Radio's Savannah Maher was there to see the two bands meet, and she sent us this postcard.

When the Western Thunder Marching Band takes the field at War Memorial Stadium these days, it really takes the field. With 235 members, all 100 yards are practically filled with people in uniforms. It is the biggest band Wyoming has ever seen, it has a new director, and unlike other schools where you have to audition to be a part of the band UW accepts everyone, even those who have never marched in a band before.
