The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline bill went through several big changes during committee hearings before eventually passing the House floor. However, the trust that funds the bill lost all dollars allocated to it.The 988 hotline offers 24/7 call, text and chat access to trained Wyoming based crisis counselors.

The committee was launched in 2018 to help address these issues in the county, but was disbanded at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be revived in January with city, county, educational, prevention, and nonprofit organizations having a presence in addition to the public, which will have a larger role. This comes as Campbell County has set a record for suicides in a single year in 2022.

In July, the nation got a new three-digit suicide prevention number – 988. A new analysis found the hotline’s call volume jumped 45% in August compared to August 2021, with the number of callers roughly doubling in two states in the Mountain West.

The Natrona Collective Health Trust in collaboration with the Wyoming Community Foundation has allocated over $2 million to improve the health and well-being of the county. $350,000 is being allocated over several years to organizations and nonprofits to help alleviate effects of COVID-19, such as suicide prevention and vaccine education and distribution efforts.

Window clings began to be distributed last month in addition to coasters to area bars and restaurants that provides a QR code and resources for suicide prevention resources available in the county as well as more generally. This comes as Campbell County's suicide rate is on the rise.

Around 8,800 students are enrolled this school year at the district's 24 traditional and virtual schools. School officials say that the the demand for mental health services is increasing about 10 percent each year, with an additional 10 percent of students at each school seeking them out. Efforts to improve the mental health of students has led to a decline in the district's suicide rate, which is on the rise in the county.

Mission Daybreak is a 10 year, $20 million initiative launched by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that seeks to build connections between the VA and outside providers through a comprehensive, public health approach that integrates researchers, clinicians, health innovators, veterans, and service members in local communities in an effort to reduce suicides.

When the Wyoming Suicide hotline will be 24/7 is still to be determined, but Andi Summerville with the Wyoming Association of Mental Health and Substance Abuse said the service is needed now more than ever as the COVID19 pandemic continues.

Park County is offering adults the opportunity to become certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid. While this training has been offered in years past, this one will include a faith-based mental health component.
