Cheyenne, WY – Wyoming has the fourth-highest suicide rate in the nation. Suicide is the second most common cause of death for people aged 15 to 24 and it ranks ninth for all types of death in Wyoming. Department of Health officials say more teenagers and young adults in Wyoming die of suicide than from cancer, heart disease, birth defects and other illnesses combined. A Wyoming Suicide Prevention Task Force member says suicide affects many more than just Wyoming's young people. She points out while people 65 and older make up 13 percent of the state's population, they account for 22 percent of Wyoming suicides.
