An effort to require all students to take four years of math will be considered by the State Senate. The Senate Education Committee recommended passage of the measure sponsored by Laramie Democrat Chris Rothfuss. He says too many students who go on to attend college either struggle or have to take remedial classes. The bill will require students to pass four years of math-based classes in order to graduate.
“No matter what you’re going to do after high school that mathematics background is going to be a key to whatever your career is going to be. So we are recognizing that through this legislation that not everyone is on a path towards college. But also recognizing that almost no matter what you do, there is going to be a strong mathematical component in your life.”
Chairman of the committee, Hank Coe, says studies show that when students take four years of math, they are more successful in college. The bill now heads to the Senate floor.
