Wyoming’s top two youth volunteers were recognized in the nation’s capital this week. Laura Harris of Green River and Trinity Rich of Douglas are the Prudential Spirit of Community Award winners. Among other things, Rich helps the elderly and neighbors with chores and tasks, and Harris helps raise money to grant the wishes of sick children.

Volunteers in grades 5 through 12 were encouraged to apply, and Wyoming had one of the youngest winners in the country. Trinity Rich is just 11 years old and is in fifth grade at Douglas Upper Elementary School.

Rich says the entire process has been overwhelming, even starting the February night they heard the news.

"There was no power in Douglas, like none, and the UPS man came and my parents were like 'What are we expecting' and we found out [the letter] was for us, and we read it through with a flashlight. Something to remember for like, ever," says Trinity

Harris is a senior at Green River High School and plans to attend Utah State next year, majoring in art and business. Just like Rich, Harris says finding out she was selected as an award recipient was an amazing feeling.

"I was bouncing off the walls, it was crazy. I was super excited about it," she says.

Rich and Harris both received $1,000 awards, a paid trip to the capital with a parent, and engraved silver medallions.
