More Coloradans Taking HiSET Exam In Wyoming

As the number of people taking the GED exam in Colorado drops, more are traveling to Wyoming to take alternatives to the test.

The GED exam was revamped, computerized and privatized last year. Wyoming offers another test for those seeking an equivalent to a high school diploma—called the HiSET—while Colorado does not.

Kelly Willmarth is program manager of the adult career and education system at Laramie County Community College. She says, so far this year, 30 percent of her HiSET test-takers in Cheyenne were from Colorado. That’s up from 11 percent last year.

“One reason people are able to come into Wyoming is that Wyoming is one if not the only state that does not have a residency requirement in order to earn that Wyoming high school equivalency certificate, so that’s why it’s easy for them to come across the border,” Willmarth says.

Willmarth says the HiSET test is slightly cheaper than the GED.

“Many of these Colorado students that are coming up have attempted the GED test in Colorado and they’ve not been successful with that,” says Willmrth. “They’re finding better success with the HiSET.”
