Now that Colorado has voted to legalize the regulated sale of marijuana, some law enforcement officers along Wyoming’s southern border are concerned about what that could mean for the Cowboy State.
Medical marijuana is already legal in Colorado. Stores selling pot for recreational purposes will be allowed to open in 2014. The possession of marijuana in any amount is illegal in Wyoming.
Cheyenne Police Chief Brian Kozak says his department has done some preparation for the change.
“We’ve trained now seven drug recognition experts that are on the police department. We’ve trained all our patrol officers to recognize the signs of cannabis impairment so that they can make those arrests.”
Kozak says driving while high is dangerous because it makes drivers more relaxed and less alert, and can impair a driver for a full 24 hours.
