Archives On The Air 74: The Poet and the Model—Selden Rodman Papers

Rick Walters

Pablo Neruda was a Nobel Prize winning poet from Chile.

In a 1971 CBS interview Steve Barker asked about the poster on Neruda’s wall of British model Twiggy.

SB: Now what interest does Pablo Neruda have in Twiggy?

PN: You know Twiggy is personified of our modern world, or was. It is like Chaplin, a great definition of our world. I notice gentleness in her appearance and it is ambiguous or lubricious. This is something very new in this century. So it has some importance for us.

The Selden Rodman papers at UW’s American Heritage Center contain two interviews with Pablo Neruda.
