Jenny Loveridge is a scientist who’s lived in Laramie since 2004. She’s snorkeled just about every body of water within 200 miles. This summer, when she was snorkeling in Alsop Lake, she saw something new on the plants: New Zealand mudsnails – an invasive aquatic species. They’re the size of a grain of rice, with a swirly tan or dark colored shell. Loveridge saw millions.

On July 28, the Albany County Conservancy issued a complaint against the Bureau of Land Management. The complaint alleges that the BLM failed to appropriately involve the public before approving part of the Rock Creek Wind Gen-Tie Transmission Lie.

On July 5, the Albany County Commission updated the Casper Aquifer Protection Plan for the first time in over a decade. The city of Laramie had previously established a protection plan in 2008, and Albany County established a plan in 2011. While those plans were separate, this updated version was created jointly between the two governments.

A rare earth mineral mining company speculates that a site in Albany County will be relatively affordable to mine.The company Western Rare Earths recently announced promising finds from its Halleck Creek project. Apparently, concentrations of rare earth minerals at the site are much better than expected, and the minerals extend at least 300 feet into the ground.

A chunk of private land in Albany County was purchased by a conservation group recently, and the hope is to guarantee public access to the land for hunting.

The western side of the state, specifically areas near Jackson, Alta and Pinedale, have seen on and off again smoke and haze this week from regional fires.Jackson-based meteorologist Alan Smith said it is coming from two large wildfires. The Moose Fire is near Salmon, Idaho and is more than 38,000 acres. Additionally, the Oak Fire is near Yosemite National Park, and at almost 19,000 acres is California’s largest wildfire.
