UW Professors Give Wyoming History Lessons A Boost

Willow Belden

Some University of Wyoming professors have been traveling to fourth grade classrooms around the state in an effort to research and improve the teaching of Wyoming history.

The project combines history with art and hands-on activities. Education professors Allen Trent and Peter Moran plan to bring it to each of the state’s counties by the end of this school year.

The lesson plans and resources they use are all online for any Wyoming teacher to access. Trent says that’s important.

“Because of our state population, there aren’t maybe as many materials out there as in a larger state, where maybe a textbook company is making multiple books about the state’s history,” says Trent. “In Wyoming, we have some good resources and materials—and we are hoping to continue to build that collection.”

Through the project, students participate in activities like designing coins that represent their counties—and writing about Wyoming artwork.

Trent and Moran hope educators around the state will continue to build on the project after this year.

“We’re building some great relationships with the teachers that we’ve met around the state,” says Trent. “So we hope this is an ongoing relationship of sharing materials and sharing ideas back and forth about what it’s like to teach about our great state.”
