The Dean of the University of Wyoming’s College of Arts and Sciences will retire this summer, after more than 40 years at the University. Oliver Walter came to U-W in 1970 to teach political science, and became dean in 1989. He says he’s seen a lot change during his time at U-W, including growing emphasis on research, more technology on campus, and increasing diversity. But, for him, a highlight has been the growth of the study abroad program and international relationships.
“One of the things that I’ve really enjoyed is the increase in our international students, an increase and interaction with universities, for me, it was particularly in China. Bringing those students over here and sending our students over there and visiting them and bringing their faculty over here. I think that’s a real improvement in the liberal arts education."
Walter says he is concerned about the growing trend of online classes. He says that no matter the technology, face-to-face relationships between teachers and students will always be best.
He says he plans to travel immediately after retirement, but is also interested in continuing to teach.
