The county fair in Big Piney is different than many county fairs—it has an art show. The fair’s Lynn Thomas Memorial art show is in its second year.
“There’s considerable art talent in Sublette County. And we needed a place to showcase that,” says Charmian McLellan, the art show coordinator.
Alongside local talent, the show attracts artists from as far as Michigan and Texas. An estimated 40 artists are at the art show.
“The chairman of the fair board said ‘I want to make it as big as the shows in Cheyenne or the Coors art show in Denver’ and I said “Well this is Big Piney, you know?” says McLellan, laughing.
The show takes place at the Community Hall, which underwent a number of improvements in preparation for the show. This includes fresh paint, new lights and displays for the art.
“It’s starting to look quite professional,” says McLellan. The art show closes this Saturday, July 25. All proceeds from the art sales goes to the artists. Thursday will feature a paint-out, in which artists paint at the show, with a reception that evening.
