House Ok's Guns In Schools

The Wyoming House of Representatives has passed a bill that would allow guns in schools, college campuses, and government meetings.

The House narrowly defeated an amendment that would have let school districts decide for themselves if guns should be allowed in schools. Evansville Republican Kendall Kroeker strongly opposed that amendment.

“When it comes to local control we would not allow our local school districts to infringe on any other protected constitutional rights, so I don’t see why this one is different.”

Laramie Democrat Charles Pelkey countered that such an important issue should be decided locally .

“Many of us here often speak in favor of local control and it’s ironic now when one critical issue, the health and safety of our children comes up, that we as the body should be the making the decision.”

Minority floor Leader Mary Throne says the Cheyenne School District is concerned about increases in Insurance Costs if the bill becomes law. The House passed the bill 42 to 17. It now advances to the Senate for further consideration.
