Archives On The Air 77: Kitten Kaye—Leon BeRoth Papers

Comic strip Don Winslow of the Navy ran from 1934 to 1955. It was used as a military recruitment tool specifically targeting the Midwest. The comic strip ran in 285 newspapers.

Leon BeRoth was the artist for most of the comic’s run. BeRoth briefly retired to rural Montana when Don Winslow of the Navy ended. But in 1957 he was inspired to write a new comic strip.

The new comic was called Kitten Kaye. It was about the adventures of a young park service employee assigned to forest fire look-out.

BeRoth cared deeply about national parks. He used Kitten Kaye to show the importance of national parks to the public. Kaye went on adventures across the country, exploring parks and famous landmarks.
